Finding Better Windows For My Home

After we started focusing heavily on exterior renovations for our home, we realized that our windows needed to change. Instead of trying to scrub them clean and deal with their leaky nature, we went to a professional glass expert and talked with him about replacing the windows. We were able to choose from a large selection of different styles, colors, and shapes, and it was really fantastic to find such amazing replacements. This blog is all about finding better windows for your home and knowing how to choose between all of the options out there. You never know, you might be surprised with how much of a difference the right windows can make.

3 Things Homeowners Should Be Looking for in Their Windows

Michele Kuhn

Windows play a vital role in the home. They provide a way to get light into the house, but they also act as an insulator. If your windows are old or are in bad shape, they still might do their job of letting in light, but they will fail at sealing in the air inside the house. This is why you should always be looking for signs that you need replacement windows. Here are some things that every homeowner should look for.

1. Your Windows Are Hot or Cold When You Touch Them

One sure sign that you need new windows is that the window is reflecting the temperature outside rather than what it should be inside. For instance, in the winter when the house is heated, you shouldn't touch the window only to feel it being freezing cold. The outside of the window can be cold, but not the inside of the window. If this is the case for you, it means that the window is no longer sealing the temperature and that air is currently seeping out the window. This will cost you a great deal in your energy bill, since you are losing air all the time.

2. The Window Is Cracked

Another sign you should be looking for is any cracks of dents in the window. A crack may not immediately mean that your window is letting in air and compromising the temperature, but it is a problem for safety. If a vandal sees that your window is already compromised, they could easily break it and get into your home.

In addition, as the temperature changes from hot to cold, the crack will only get bigger and bigger, so you should get the crack taken care of sooner rather than later.

3. You Notice Debris Between Panes

If you have double-paned windows, you need to be looking for debris inside the window. The windows should be totally clean and free of dust, dirt, and especially bugs. If you see something as large as a bug inside the window, it means that there are lots of things passing through, especially the air in your house. This problem should be addressed immediately.

Even though it might seem expensive to change a window or multiple windows in your home, this will save you money in the long run seeing that your house will be better insulated and more secure.
