Finding Better Windows For My Home

After we started focusing heavily on exterior renovations for our home, we realized that our windows needed to change. Instead of trying to scrub them clean and deal with their leaky nature, we went to a professional glass expert and talked with him about replacing the windows. We were able to choose from a large selection of different styles, colors, and shapes, and it was really fantastic to find such amazing replacements. This blog is all about finding better windows for your home and knowing how to choose between all of the options out there. You never know, you might be surprised with how much of a difference the right windows can make.

Green Approaches To Climate Control Through Window Tinting And Other Tech

Michele Kuhn

You deserve to live in a comfortable, controlled environment, just like everyone else. And, there's no reason why you can't have this while also being kind to the Earth. Here are some green approaches to air conditioning based on emerging, new technologies such as window tinting.

Solar Windows and Window Tinting

It might seem counterintuitive that you can take energy from the sun and use it to keep your house cool, but this is actually the case. Obviously, you should put a solar photovoltaic cell on the top of your house as well, but windows have been a missed opportunity up to now.  In general, windows will be built in areas where a lot of light comes through.

If you don't actually need the window to be transparent and in fact prefer that it's tinted, you can instead get solar windows that traps this sunlight and convert it into electricity. This energy can then be used to cool your house just like normal solar panels on your roof. It will also have the added benefit of making it so that you don't get areas of your house heated up by sunlight which can be wasteful.

There are also options that filter out only the non-visible parts of the light spectrum. This means that the window would absorb infrared, but nothing else, so you could still see through the window.

Ice

Another option is to use ice in conjunction with other air cooling technologies in order to make sure that you don't overuse energy when cooling an area. This works by circulating refrigerant through copper coils. Water is allowed to freeze on the outside at night, and this ice is used during the day to cool warm refrigerant instead of the compressor.

This way, you use the natural cooling ability of the environment to your advantage and cut back on how much energy you need to draw from other sources that may not be as eco-friendly. Estimates have it that this method can cut down on energy costs by as much as 30 percent. If you combine it with a system that also draws energy from the surrounding environment directly, this could go a long way towards making you completely energy independent.

Many areas will actually pay you if you end up adding more energy to the system then you need on a day to day basis. The payoff of solar energy will obviously depend on the area where you live. If you're closer to the equator, it could pay off more, for example. Contact a company like Solar Shield Inc for more information on this topic.
