Finding Better Windows For My Home

After we started focusing heavily on exterior renovations for our home, we realized that our windows needed to change. Instead of trying to scrub them clean and deal with their leaky nature, we went to a professional glass expert and talked with him about replacing the windows. We were able to choose from a large selection of different styles, colors, and shapes, and it was really fantastic to find such amazing replacements. This blog is all about finding better windows for your home and knowing how to choose between all of the options out there. You never know, you might be surprised with how much of a difference the right windows can make.

3 Options To Make Double-Hung Windows Look More Attractive

Michele Kuhn

Double-hung windows are the workhorse of replacement windows. The style features two vertically parallel panes of glass that are both fully operable, which means each framed pane can move up and down or tilt inwards for cleaning. Double-hung windows are installed in many homes as original or window replacements due to the combination of form and function.

But form and function alone don't make for the most attractive window. If you are in the market for double-hung replacement windows and want a more visually interesting option, there are a few different ways to achieve that goal.

Wood Framed Windows

Double-hung windows have a decently visible frame that can look Spartan if you opt for white vinyl against a white house or decorative if you have wood frames stained in a warm color. Wood frames can enhance the look of the double-hung window while keeping the overall style simplistic and in no danger of clashing with the decor of your home.

Wood window frames have high efficiency on par with vinyl, which can help you save on energy costs. The wood frames do require some more maintenance and upkeep than vinyl, however, due to potential weather damage. Check your frames for damage after particularly hot summers or freezing winters and call in a replacement window specialist for repairs, if needed.

Windows with Grilles

Do you want to stick with low-maintenance vinyl for the window frames? You can instead add visual interest to the double-hung windows by selecting a model that has grilles, or a vinyl grid that marks off each pane into six or nine squares. You can also opt to only have the grid on one pane of the double-hung window, which adds some visual interest without adding too much extra geometry to your windows.

Grilles embedded into the glass offer the easiest way to keep both your window and the grilles clean and free from damage. However, keep in mind that embedded grilles can't be easily removed if you change your mind later on.

Decorative Window Clings

Don't want to pay extra for a decorative window frame or grilles that you might grow to hate over time? A budget, low-commitment option exists in decorative window clings. The static-adhered clings are available at most hardware stores in a variety of patterns and sizes that you can also cut down to a custom size.

Decorative clings can allow you to alter the appearance of only some of your double-hung windows, portions of each window, or all of the windows in a particular room. Some styles add privacy, which can come in handy in bathrooms or bedrooms, without blocking out much natural light. And the design simply peels off without leaving any residue behind if you should change your decor later on.
