Finding Better Windows For My Home

After we started focusing heavily on exterior renovations for our home, we realized that our windows needed to change. Instead of trying to scrub them clean and deal with their leaky nature, we went to a professional glass expert and talked with him about replacing the windows. We were able to choose from a large selection of different styles, colors, and shapes, and it was really fantastic to find such amazing replacements. This blog is all about finding better windows for your home and knowing how to choose between all of the options out there. You never know, you might be surprised with how much of a difference the right windows can make.

Replacing Your Home's Old Windows? Here's How to Prepare Your Home

Michele Kuhn

Replacing older residential windows is a great way to increase the energy efficiency of your home. In addition, the new windows will give your home a facelift and likely make it safer. Whether you choose vinyl, wood, single-hung, or double-hung windows, new Andersen replacement windows always increase the value of a home.

While the glass contractors will do the physical work of replacing the windows, there are other things you will be expected to do as the homeowner. These things include the following.

Remove Everything From Inside and Outside of Each Window

In order for the glass contractor to replace your home's windows, they need to have access to the interior and exterior of each window. While having access to one side or another is fine for the initial measurements required to order the replacement windows, access to both sides will be necessary when removing the old windows and putting in new ones.

In the days before the new windows arrive for installation, walk around your home and remove everything near a window. Move beds, desks, furniture, and any artwork that may potentially get in the way of the installation crew or that could be damaged if it falls.

Once you have completed clearing the interiors, walk the exterior of your home and make sure the window areas are also clear outside. If you have a lawnmower, ladder, or children's toys sitting under windows, then they need to be removed and stored away. Additionally, any seriously overgrown brush should be cut back so there is room to walk between the vegetation and your home.

Take Down All of the Window Coverings

Not only do you need to clear away the furniture and other items from each window but you also need to remove all of the window coverings.

If your windows have mini-blinds, then they should be removed by pulling them off the mounting hardware at the top. However, unless you plan to permanently remove the blinds, the mounting hardware can be left in place. And, since the blinds can probably use a good deep cleaning, take advantage of this opportunity and give them a soak in the bathtub to remove accumulated dirt and dust.

If you have curtains or sheers installed, then remove both the fabric and the rods. Dust all of the hardware and toss the curtains in the washing machine or take them to the cleaners if they are soiled.

Finally, if you have shutters on the inside or outside of any of your home's windows, then they may need to be removed prior to window replacement. If you are unsure if they will get in the way of the work, then speak with your glass contractor.
