Finding Better Windows For My Home

After we started focusing heavily on exterior renovations for our home, we realized that our windows needed to change. Instead of trying to scrub them clean and deal with their leaky nature, we went to a professional glass expert and talked with him about replacing the windows. We were able to choose from a large selection of different styles, colors, and shapes, and it was really fantastic to find such amazing replacements. This blog is all about finding better windows for your home and knowing how to choose between all of the options out there. You never know, you might be surprised with how much of a difference the right windows can make.

5 Reasons To Install Skylights During A Roof Replacement

Michele Kuhn

If you want to add skylights to your roof, then the ideal time to do so is when you are having your roof replaced. A roofing contractor can help you plan and implement this upgrade.

1. Sync Up the Warranties

It can be devastating if your skylight warranty outlasts the roof warranty, or vice versa, as working on one can negate correlated damages to the other if the work isn't done under warranty. By installing the skylights and roofs at the same time, they will be both be under warranty. Further, some roof warranties are voided if you add a rooftop penetration later, and a skylight counts.

2. Ensure Proper Seals

A major issues with skylights are leaks around the seals, and this is often due to issues during installation. If you install the skylight at the same time as the roof, then the seals will be placed correctly. You also won't have to worry about seals being broken or damaged  as you would if you had to have a new roof installed a couple of years after skylight installation.

3. Coordinate Materials

Matching shingles can sometimes be difficult. When a skylight is installed into an existing roof, some shingles may be damaged in the process. Trying to replace these shingles with ones that match in color and style can be challenging, so the roof may have a patchwork appearance around the skylight. If you install the skylight and roof at the same time, you won't have to worry about any shingle mismatches.

4. Address Any Challenges

Every roof will have its own unique challenges. A heavily sloped roof in a rainy climate, for example, may be more prone to fast run off that can wear down the seal on the upslope side of a skylight. A roofer can install rain diverters upslope of the window, thus minimizes the problem. By having a roofer do the skylight installation, you can be sure they will keep a sharp eye out for any roof issues that could arise.

5. Reduce Time and Cost

Money is should be a major reason to combine these installations. Combining installations saves time, which in turns reduces the labor costs of both the skylight installation and the new roof. You may also save on some material costs, since the roofer won't be installing shingles just to rip them out later for the skylight installation. Discounts may also be applied to larger jobs, but you aren't likely to get a discount for two separate smaller jobs.
